AFL is a game of big marks, bigger hits, and some genuinely bizarre history. Here's a handful of facts to whip out next time someone at training thinks they know everything about the code.
The game almost had a totally different name
Early versions of Australian football were played under a tangle of different rules in the 1850s and 60s, borrowing bits from rugby, Gaelic football and gymnastics. It took years of arguing between Melbourne clubs before something resembling the modern game settled down - so next time your team can't agree on a jersey design, just remember it could be worse.
The boundary throw-in used to be a guess
Umpires didn't always have to throw the ball in dead straight - for decades it was much looser, leading to endless arguments. The straight-throw rule we take for granted today is a relatively modern fix to one of the game's oldest headaches.
Jumper numbers weren't always a thing
Numbered guernseys weren't introduced until the 1910s-20s depending on the competition, and even then clubs dragged their feet adopting them. Before that, fans identified players by build, boots, or just squinting really hard.
Some clubs have wilder mascots than others
From the obvious (Cats, Hawks, Magpies) to the more unusual club nicknames born out of local history, AFL club identities are as much about geography and folklore as they are about football. It's part of why club colours and guernsey design matter so much - they're carrying more history than most fans realise.
The guernsey itself has quietly evolved a lot
What started as heavy wool jumpers built more for warmth than performance has turned into lightweight, sublimated, moisture-wicking kits designed for players covering 15+ kilometres a game. The colours might look similar to a century ago, but the fabric technology is unrecognisable.
